Chinese-American Railway Transportation Joint Research Center

Call for Proposal: CRRC-UIUC Research Program

Proposals Due: January 28, 2019, 5:00 P.M.

The Chinese-American Railway Transportation Joint Research Center (CART-JRC) announces a new round of call for proposals on cooperative research projects between the CRRC Co. Ltd., China (CRRC) and the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign (UIUC).  Established in 2016, CART-JRC serves as a long-term partnership between CRRC and UIUC. Its mission is to bring together world-class faculty and researchers at Illinois and state-of-art technologies and practice at CRRC to promote basic and advanced research and development in railway transportation, with a specific focus on engineering technologies for high-speed, intercity and urban rail transportation in China and the United States. More information about CART-JRC, its recent activities, and previous/ongoing projects can be found at the following website: http://crrc.engr.illinois.edu.

About CRRC: CRRC is the world’s largest supplier of rail transportation equipment with the complete product lines and leading technologies. Headquartered in Beijing, CRRC has about 50 wholly-owned & majority-owned subsidiaries and over 180,000 employees. Its main businesses cover the R&D, design, manufacture, repair, sale, lease and technical services for rolling stock, urban rail transit vehicles, engineering machinery, all types of electrical equipment, electronic equipment and parts, electric products and environmental protection equipment, consulting services, industrial investment and management, asset management, import and export.

Solicited Proposals

CRRC solicits the following three topics, and the detailed descriptions can be found in the attached documents.

  • Research and development of new air filtering structure/device for high-speed train equipment cabin.
  • Research and development of R744 refrigerant for 400km/h high-speed train refrigeration and heat pump under HVAC two mode circles.
  • Research on application of active noise reduction technology in high-speed.

Proposal Format

Please prepare five to seven pages of technical proposal description; plus extra pages of references, a budget for the proposed period of research (including appropriate tuition and indirect costs), a two-page (maximum) budget justification1, and a two-page NSF-style bio for each PI/Co-PI. Please use the attached Microsoft Word proposal template (Research_Proposal_Template.doc). It is not necessary that every proposal includes all sections of the template. Note that estimated project performance periods and initial budget estimates are subject to change depending on the final scope and effort required for the proposed effort, and some projects do not have funding estimates at this time. Therefore, all budgets should be justified relative to the work required to accomplish the tasks as assessed by the PIs. All funded projects require periodic updates in every sixth month (a written progress report with provided templates, and/or a presentation), and a written final report at the end of the project. A single PDF file containing all specified items should be submitted for each proposal.

Selection Process

All proposals collected by the Center (CART-JRC) will be reviewed by CRRC research staff. Project selection and contact with CRRC collaborators will be communicated through CART-JRC on an ad-hoc basis. The review process should be completed no later than February 28, 2019.

Submission and Contact Information

For final submission, please include the PI’s last name in the filename of the PDF proposal document (ex. LastName_CRRCproposal.pdf). Submit your proposal(s) by email, no later than 5:00 pm CST, on Jan 28, 2019 to Yanfeng Ouyang (yfouyang@illinois.edu) and copy Chao Lei (chaolei@illinois.edu), using “CRRC-UIUC Research Proposal Submission” in the subject line.
